Snowboarder dies at Alpental

A 20-year-old snowboarder died yesterday afternoon after falling more than 200 feet off a cliff at Alpental Ski Area, authorities said.

The accident occurred at about 1:40 p.m. when Justin Lewis of Seattle reportedly went into a closed area near the International Cliffs, and went over a rock outcropping. He was apparently snowboarding alone.

Two off-duty members of the Alpental ski patrol, who happened to be near where the man fell, responded within moments of the accident and began CPR. Lewis eventually was transported down the mountain. He died at 2:45 p.m.
