Skiing at Snoqualmie Pass

SNOQUALMIE PASS - The snowpack is skimpy, but that didn't stop some 2,000 eager skiers from descending yesterday on Summit West at Snoqualmie Pass.

With a packed base of 17 inches, Summit West became the seventh ski area in Washington to open. The pass needs about another foot of snow before all lifts can start running, said Guy Lawrence, marketing director.

Nearby Alpental, Summit Central and Summit East should open in the next few weeks, if the weather cooperates, Lawrence said. The mountain forecast for this week is cold and dry.

Mount Baker, Crystal Mountain and Stevens Pass are open this weekend with limited operations.
