Notes 2012/2013 season

First Measurable Snow:   October 21
Last Measurable Snow:   May 22
Season Total:   320"

Monday, May 20, 2013

The snow has been gone from my back yard now for a little more then a week, and the final weekend at Alpental on May 4/5 turned out to be great.  Sunshine, and I hear huge crowds on Sunday. I only went Saturday and crowds were moderate and weather excellent.
EVO is starting their work up at the Summit and the ski area is speeding along with the work on the Silver Fir lodge.  Snow is melted up to about 3800' and melting quickly as normal.   Last snowfall was May 1 so far and the season ending snowfall total at my count is 319".  Another fun season!

After a short heat wave it has cooled back down to winter temps and lots of snow.  1 1/2' fell over the weekend and it is still falling today.  Lifts are closed during the week at all areas and Central has been scheduled for its final weekend coming this next sat/sun then Alpental will finish out the year to the 5th.

April 1, 2013 - April FOOLS DAY

So, the weekend before last we got dumped on, 3' of new snow followed by almost summertime heat, sunshine and temps hitting the 60's.  The melt is on and we've lost 1.5-2' of snow the past week. My stick was over 6 1/2' after the snowfall and now is just a tad under 5' and shrinking.  I haven't seen the temp drop below 34 degrees in more then 9 days at least.  Night skiing is done, West and Hyak are closed and weekdays at Alpental is shortened to Thur-Sun starting next week. The end is near but it looks like it might just eek out to May5.   Snow is in the forecast this coming weekend.

Monday, March 25, 2013

After a pretty quiet March we ended up with a week that dumped almost 3' of snow for our final weekend of Hyak operation.  The snow ended Friday with Saturday being mostly sunny and cold to start and lots of powder, then finishing up Sunday with intermittent sunshine and not quite as warm.  The ski area does not want to operate Hyak or West beyond this weekend so Central and Alpental are the only options left for the season at this point. Snowfall this season is still well below normal but coverage after this past week of storms is good.  Night skiing also has closed for the season so 9am-4pm is the rule from here on out.

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

After a mostly quiet February, the last 7-8 days kicked ass with about 3' of snow.  More snow is predicted the first week of March so at least our spring riding is looking to be safe.  Snow depth reached its max of the year at 6 1/2' but has settled down to just over 6'.

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

The temps have warmed up into the 30's-40's with sometimes sunshine and sometimes light rain.  Spring like conditions and temps staying above freezing at night too.  There is talk of more snow coming later this week, so lets hope so.  Were going to start needing some snow to see us through the spring.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

After a few days of heavy snow, SL's have now gone over 3,000' and our new snow has turned to glop.  At this point our snowfall for this season is 26" behind last year but coverage is good most everywhere and temps have been pretty low this winter so melt has been minimal.  Looked out at my measuring stick this morning and it showed 5 1/2' which should shrink back down to 5' after the forecast rain the next couple days.  Supposed to be a sunshine weekend, could be nice spring conditions.

Friday, January 25, 2013

Finally, a couple days of snow!  Yesterday morning woke up to about 3" new and today another 2" but it had changed to mix rain/snow so what did fall was heavy and wet.  Snow levels are now predicted to be hovering around the pass level so conditions might be challenging of the wet type instead of rock hard cement.

COOOLLLLLDDDDD.   It has been clear and cold now for about 2 weeks with no new snow.  A couple of days it actually warmed up into the 40's but for the most part it has stayed in the 20's during the day and down to the low-mid teens at night.  Very little snow this month, far below normal.  At least there has been no snow melt so we are holding steady. Hope for more snow soon!

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

We had some snow last week, lots of rain and now freezing temps with clear cold nights.  All that adds up to concrete conditions. Went out for a ride at Central last night and on the steeper slopes the bullet proof snow is tough.  We really need to get some more snow!  Groomers are the only places to ride right now.

Friday, December 28, 2012

Opening day for the 12/13 season. Lifts started loading around 9:05am and there was lots of untracked powder everywhere. Crowds were light due to this being mid-week.

Sunday, December 16, 2012

It is currently 10:45pm and in the middle of our largest storm so far of this season. Since 4pm we've received over a foot of snow and predictions are up to 3' by the end of Monday total.  West, Central and Alpental have opened and Hyak is scheduled for the day after Christmas, though we where hoping it would be Saturday the 22nd.  Nordic starts on the 21st....  Should be no problem for snow now with this latest storm.

Friday, December 7, 2012

Tomorrow kicks off the season for Snoqualmie at summit west.  15" of snow has fallen the past 24hrs and it continues to fall. It is HEAVY and temps in the low 30's but at least it is snow and it is piling up.

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Well, not much snow has fallen with mayby 8"-10" at the summit but snow is predicted the rest of this week. Lets hope it is enough to get West open and get things kick started.  White Pass is opening this weekend, Stevens and Crystal have already been open for a couple weeks (limited access).  Today the SL is down to 2,000' and it is snowing and we hope enough will fall to get the area open this weekend.

Monday, November 19, 2012

A year ago we were kicking off the season around the state at some of the areas. This year we are not so lucky yet, but it is snowing hard today with about 5" new snow this morning.  The SL is suppose to go up/down this week so I don't think we'll be hearing any talk about opening yet.

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Our first real storm of the season and 11" of snow on the ground, so cool.  Not sure what the forecast is down the road, or how long this snow will stick around but I sure hope it is here to stay.

RAIN RAIN.....and more

Snow is all gone below 5,000' and should be gone at the upper levels by tomorrow.  SL's are now up to around 8,000' and temp at Hyak is running in the upper 40's and it is RAINING HARD.   Nice to have the precipitation, but we need another cold front to drop down and turn this to snow.

October 21, 2012

First snowfall, it was predicted and it actually happened.  Temps dropped to the mid 30's and it snowed pretty good.  Not enough to realistically try to board or ski (though some kids did try), we ended up with about 4" of snow from the afternoon of the 20th til the official measuring time of early am on the 21st. It snowed more until we ended up with about 5" of snow to kick off the new snow season.
